Veeralur is a small village located at the west of the Thiruvannamalai District inTamil Nadu, South India. It is one of the 150 Villages of the Kalasapakkam Union ofPolurTaluk. This tiny village is located at the foot of the hills, which is known as“Paruvathamalai”. It is the border of the taluk and is surrounded by the hills all around.Veeralur.
This is the last station for the bus transport, which operates between polur (Talukhead-quarters) and Veeralur and also between Thiruvannamalai (District headquarters)and Veeralur. No other transport facilities are available for this remotevillage.Veeralur has been a Salesian parish since 1969.
A zealous Italian missionarynamely Rev. Fr. Venantius Villanova SDB, was the first parish priest of St. Anthony’s churchVeeralur, after it was bifurcated from the Sacred Heart Church, Polur. He wasa lovable pastor of the people for 18 years during which time he evangelized thepeople and nurtured the catholic faith and created 15 Christian Communities in thisarea.After the heavenly reward of Rev. Fr. Villanova SDB, Rev. Fr. SolomonKulandaisamy SDB, took charge of the parish (1988-1993). During his time he hadintroduced the social ministry and built up the Christian communities in faith and socialinvolvement. He had rendered the great service of settling the land documents with properpattas and other registrations.
PP. On 24th May 2011, Fr. Thamathiruthuvam became the Rector and the PP,Fr. Parthiban SDB became the Director of VIA and Fr. Cappel continued to be theAdministrator of the veeralur community. Fr. David Mariaselvam SDB, took charge asthe Director of VIA and as the Asst. PP and in-charge of the Boarding in the year 2012May. From 2013 Fr. PitchaiMuthu was appointed as the Director of VIA and Fr. DavidSDB, was transferred to Chennai. Fr. Clement Ignatius SDB, took charge as Rectorand PP from 24th May, 2014 and Fr. Thama got transferred to Kotagiri. From 24 May2015 Fr. Patrick joji took charge as Rector, Parish Priest and correspondend,Principal.
In the month ofJanuary 2000, the local ordinary Rt. Rev. Chinnappa SDB, DD, at the request of theProvincial Rev. Fr. Bellarmine SDB, handed over the Veeralur Parish to the Salesiansin perpetuity. On 15th June 2001, a contract was made with the Franciscan sisters ofSt. Joseph (FSJ) to collaborate with the Salesians in social and medical ministries.Accordingly, a group consists of four Nuns arrived Veeralur on that day to take up theministries.
On the same day the social ministry began at Pudur under the title VillageIntegral Animation (VIA). From 1st October 2000 onwards an assistant parish priestwas given to the parish and the first Asst. PP was Rev. Fr. Arulvalan SDB, Rev. Fr.Pappu Raj SDB, succeeded him as the Asst. PP and the Director of VIA from 24th May2001.After Fr. Vasanth, Fr. Robert SDB became the parish priest and Fr. MartinJones SDB, as the Asst. PP from 24th May 2003 till 2005. Then Fr. K.C. Antony SDB,took charge as the PP from May 24th, 2005-2006. Fr. Bosco Augustine SDB, joinedthe parish in the month of November 2005 and Fr.Thamathiruthuvam SDB, joined asAsst. PP in January 24th 2006.
Then Fr. John Christy SDB, became the parish priestfrom 24th May 2006 with Fr. Robert Abraham SDB, and Fr. Thamathiruthuvam SDB,as the Asst. parish priests. On May 24th May 2008, Fr. John Christy and Fr.Thamathiruthuvam were in the Veeralur mission. On 24th May 2009, Fr. MariaselvamSDB, became the Rector and Parish priest and Fr. AmalrajCappel SDB, asAdministrator and Fr.Thamathiruthuvam as Director of VIA and Fr. Leo Maria Josephbelonging to Vellore Diocese as the Asst. PP. On 24th May 2010 there were 3Salesians in the Veeralur mission continuing the good works. They were Fr.Mariaselvam – as the Rector and PP, Fr. Cappel – as the administrator andFr.Thamathiruthuvam – as the VIA director and in-charge of the Boarding and as theAsst.
Fr. Charles Stephen as Asst PP and Fr. Augustine Arulraj as School andVIA Incharge and Asst PP. On 24th May 2016 Fr.AugustineArulraj was transfered&Fr. Jerome Selvaraj joined as asst PP. Fr. Charles Stephen took a leave of absencefrom the month of January 2017. Fr. Jerome Selvaraj went to Sri lanka as amissionary on July 6th, 2017. At Present Fr. Patrick Joji acts as a Rector, Parishpriest, correspondent and administrator and Fr. Rozario acts an assistant parishpriest, incharge of the school, social ministry, youth ministry, and night school.
